What Commonfolio is

A connected workspace for personal knowledge.

Commonfolio starts with the daily journal, then lets structure emerge naturally. Notes, project pages, references, tasks, decisions, and people all live in the same long-term workspace, so context stays connected instead of scattered.

Daily journal

A reliable place to write what happened, what you noticed, and what needs attention next.

Pages and references

Turn recurring ideas, projects, resources, and research into durable pages you can build over time.

Tasks and planning

Create follow-ups from your notes without separating action from the reason behind it.

People and relationships

Keep meaningful context about people, conversations, and commitments close to your work.

Why it’s different

Less like a productivity dashboard. More like a thinking companion you own.

Not just documents

Pages are connected through backlinks and context, so your knowledge keeps its shape as it grows.

Not just tasks

Planning stays tied to journal entries, projects, people, and the decisions that created the work.

Not just chat

AI can help reflect, summarize, or structure information, but Commonfolio remains your workspace.

A living personal graph

Daily notes, people, references, tasks, and ideas become part of one evolving system.

Core features

Everything important has a place — and keeps its context.

Commonfolio gives you enough structure to find and follow through, without forcing your thinking into a rigid system.

Daily journal

Write freely, capture reflections, log decisions, and return to the thread of your days.

Outliner-style notes

Break thoughts into flexible blocks that can be reorganized as ideas become clearer.

Connected pages

Create pages for projects, topics, references, and ideas that deserve a long-term home.

Backlinks and graph context

See how ideas relate across time without manually maintaining a perfect filing system.

Tasks and follow-through

Turn notes into actions while preserving the context that makes the action meaningful.

People records and contextual search

Remember conversations, commitments, and relationship context, then find what matters later.

Steward AI

Helpful when invited. Quiet when not.

The Steward assistant is designed as a bounded companion for reflection and organization. It supports your thinking only with clear intent, helping you transform conversations and notes into useful structure without taking over the workspace.

Tone and trust

Your knowledge stays yours.

Commonfolio is designed to feel private, grounded, and durable — a place for long-term thinking rather than another noisy productivity feed.

  • Calm, writing-first interface
  • User-controlled structure and AI actions
  • Clear boundaries for public/private workspaces, provider-backed AI, and encryption at rest
  • Built for reflection, planning, recall, and follow-through
  • Designed for continuity across months and years

FAQ

Common questions

A few practical answers as Commonfolio moves toward early access.

What is Commonfolio?
Commonfolio is a journal-first personal knowledge management app. It helps your daily notes become connected knowledge, tasks, people context, references, and long-term reflection.
Who is Commonfolio for?
Commonfolio is for people who want a calmer way to think, write, remember, and follow through: reflective writers, makers, researchers, founders, students, and anyone building a personal knowledge system over time.
How is Commonfolio different from a notes app?
A notes app stores documents. Commonfolio treats your journal, pages, tasks, people, references, and ideas as connected parts of one living workspace, so context can accumulate instead of disappearing into folders.
What is Steward?
Steward is Commonfolio’s built-in AI companion — the one agent whose purpose is to help you use and care for your personal knowledge workspace. It can help you reflect on notes, find related context, create tasks, update journal entries, add information to people records, or turn a conversation into a structured page when you ask. Commonfolio may also support other agents that become specialized through your interactions around different areas of your life, such as work, learning, relationships, projects, or personal goals. Steward is different: it is the general companion for your whole Commonfolio workspace.
Which Commonfolio features use AI?
Steward is the most visible AI experience, but it is not the only feature that may use AI. Capabilities such as semantic search, sentence correction, validation, summarization, embeddings, and context analysis may require relevant notes or parts of your workspace graph to be processed by a third-party LLM/model provider when those features are available and you choose to use or enable them. Commonfolio’s goal is to make those tradeoffs clear so you can choose the right level of convenience and privacy for each workspace.
What is the difference between public and private workspaces?
A public workspace is the default. “Public” does not mean published to the internet or visible to other users; it means provider-backed AI features may use relevant workspace content when you invoke or enable those features. A private workspace disables provider-backed AI tools for that workspace, so its content is not sent to third-party LLM/model providers. Commonfolio uses encryption at rest where appropriate, but it is not end-to-end encrypted unless a specific future feature says so explicitly.
Does AI act automatically?
AI-powered features are designed to run when you choose to use or enable them. Some capabilities, such as semantic search, may analyze relevant workspace data so they can work. Steward and other agents should support your thinking, not take over your workspace or make changes without clear intent.
Is Commonfolio private and secure?
Commonfolio is designed around personal ownership and user control, but different features involve different privacy tradeoffs. Workspace data is protected with encryption at rest where appropriate, but that is different from end-to-end encryption. The default workspace is public/AI-enabled, which means relevant content may be sent to a third-party LLM/model provider when you choose to use provider-backed AI features such as Steward, semantic search, correction, validation, summarization, or embeddings. Private workspace content is not sent to third-party LLM/model providers, because provider-backed AI tools are disabled for private workspaces.
Can I use Commonfolio without AI?
Yes. Commonfolio is useful as a journaling and personal knowledge management app without AI-powered features. You can write, organize, link, plan, and reflect without using Steward, semantic search, correction, or other AI-assisted capabilities.
Can AI access private workspaces?
No. Private workspaces disable provider-backed AI tools. Commonfolio will not send private workspace content to third-party LLM/model providers, so Steward, semantic search, correction, validation, summarization, embeddings, and other provider-backed AI features cannot read, summarize, search, or act on that workspace’s content.
Can I export my notes?
Data portability matters for personal knowledge management. Commonfolio is being designed with long-term ownership in mind, and exact export options will be shared as the product approaches wider availability.
Is Commonfolio available now?
Commonfolio is currently moving toward early access. You can join the waitlist on this page or start a conversation by emailing hello@commonfolio.ai.
Who makes Commonfolio?
Commonfolio is created and owned by Reacticity Software.
